Ray Ross is a retired teacher whose first experience of Derwent Hill was as a schoolboy himself way back in the 60’s. He currently volunteers as a Leader and Assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at a centre in Sunderland.
During his teaching career he has taken numerous groups to Derwent Hill, both Primary age students as well as older special needs groups and those completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
A number of these students have needed the support that the Friends of Derwent Hill provides in order for them to access the experiences that the centre provides. In the case of those with additional needs the cost of support staff is covered, which is vital in most cases. He has witnessed first-hand the difference a visit to the centre has on children and is committed to supporting the charity.
